  • Information

    earthenware

    Earthenware is a shaped clay then immersed in a bath of tin-based enamel, called tin enamel. This coating provides objects with better impermeability. Furthermore, pewter, when cooked, gives the enamel a artists can create a variety of decorations.  The pieces are less strong, less hard, less dense and more porous than stoneware or porcelain. They therefore absorb liquids more easily than other ceramics. Due to its natural porosity, a varnish must be applied to the earthenware to make it waterproof.

    The glazed earth

    Based on red clay, the pieces  are often covered with engobe, plain or decorated, enameled with a "varnish"_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-58d_translucide . 
    In fact, in order to contain liquids in earthen containers, it must be covered with a vitreous coating, called "glaze", due to the natural porosity of the earth. This translucent cover will contain liquids and food preparations.

    The ceramist  can play on the  earth color, which turns red when it contains iron oxide, or white when it contains limestone, silica, kaolin. In this case, he superimposes the two layers of earth of different colors, and digs to reveal the lower layer (technique known as "sgraffiato").
